Revealed: Locations of 245 Boots store closures over the last year
C+D can exclusively reveal the locations of 245 Boots branches that have closed in England over the last year - use our interactive map to see where they are.
Boots has closed 245 branches as it closes in on its plan to shutter 300 stores.
Exclusive C+D analysis reveals the closure of 245 branches between March 2023 and March 2024.
Last June the multiple confirmed plans to close 300 branches across England “over the next year”.
Now, C+D has analysed data from the NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) to determine the number and location of stores closed in England so far.
At the time, Boots said it planned to dispose of premises located “in close proximity to each other”, although it remained unclear which these were.

The NHSBSA states that its data “should be taken as a guide only” due to limitations such as “delays in informing [it] of changes” – although this also allows for the possibility that the number of closures could be even greater.
Boots did not deny C+D's list of closures when approached by C+D.
Closures “progressing as planned”
A Boots spokesperson told C+D yesterday (April 18) that the multiple is “continuing an ongoing programme” to “modernise its store estate, announced last year”, which “involves the consolidation of a number of stores that are within close proximity to another Boots store”.
They said that the programme “is progressing as planned” and that as Boots previously announced, “around 300 stores will have closed by June 2024”.
They stressed that all affected team members in closed stores have been offered alternative roles and no redundancies have been made, adding that the multiple has sold the pharmacy contracts for a number of the 300 stores so that other providers have been able to continue pharmacy provision.
Sales, rumours and losses
Meanwhile, Boots’ parent company Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) last month revealed a net loss of $5.9 billion for the last quarter “compared to net earnings of $703 million” in the same quarter last year.
But Boots reported a 1.7% pharmacy sales increase for the year’s second quarter.
The multiple attributed the growth in part to “popular” pharmacy services, which delivered an “almost 40%” growth.
At the time, WBA chief executive Tim Wentworth said the company was “continuing to strategically review” its portfolio “over the next three months in an effort to ensure it drives growth and delivers value”.
In January, Wentworth said that WBA would act “with everything on the table in terms of putting our business on the right tracks”.
At the time, when asked by C+D whether this includes selling or floating Boots UK, WBA declined to clarify.
But in December, Bloomberg reported that WBA was said to be considering listing the £7bn UK pharmacy chain on the stock exchange.
The report also noted that the sale of Boots’ pension scheme had removed “a stumbling block” to a potential sale.
